N&UR Video Podcast No. 2: The Cuts & Birdman Records
The second video podcast has finally arrived!!!
Trying to interview Oakland-based band The Cuts backstage after their show at the Mezzanine is no easy task. The band's buzzing following a riduclous good set, alcohol is plentiful, and the distracting legion of friends is lead by Primo - who muses about how his friendship with the band caused him to lose his job in New York ... before jumping into the chorus of "Ms. New Booty." When my frustration subsides, it all becomes clear - this is a genuine rock and roll backstage, and the Cuts are a genuine rock and roll band. With a look and attitude straight out of a mid-70's garage, the Cuts' sound blends elements of glam, punk and psychedelia into something wholly unique. Their latest release, From Here On Out, is a bit of a musical time machine, while remaining free of gimmicks.
This genuine vintage sound is indicative of the label they call home - Birdman Records. The label was launched by David Katznelson back when he was a frustrated Vice President of A&R at Warner Bros. Katznelson had signed such notables as the Flaming Lips and Mudhoney, but was growing inceasingly tired of defending these bands to his bosses. Thus, he decided to return home to San Francisco, and devote himself to nurturing and promoting the music he loved - strictly on his terms. The label now boasts a lineup that includes the Gris Gris, Howlin Rain, Paula Frazer, Apes, the Nice Boys and the Time Flys (who feature the Cuts' Andy Jordan on guitars).
The video features the Cuts performing "Out Here in Space," "Stop Asking" and "Demons" - all written by Jordan, and from their latest release.

That. Was. So. Great.
I found myself paying attention to the production of the video as well as the content (I can do that because I am talented like that), and was quite amazed at the quality of the production. Now admittedly I know NOTHING about video production and I am the world's shittiest photographer, but it certainly did not look homemade in the slightest.
And the people you taped were also very open and forthcoming and seemed very comfortable being taped. I think that speaks a lot to your talents as film-makers. Bravo.
Will--Loved the video! Took 25 years off my age for the 8 minute show, I felt so infused with pep and youth watching the performance and listening to the interview--Dave is right, "true, unabandoned rock and roll brilliance." I really felt like I got to know this crazy, talented band, and heaven knows I would NEVER have gotten such an intimate sense of who they are without you and Primo giving me the scoop.
(applause) Well done! That was a really impressive segment. I loved the interview with David. Where the heck do you find the time to put these video-casts together?
